Colour Cubed Welcomes Birmingham City University Work Placement Students

MARCH, 2024

At Colour Cubed Creative Communications, we’re all about nurturing the next generation of creative minds. So, when Emily Davies, a second-year student from Birmingham City University reached out to us for a work placement opportunity, we couldn’t wait to give her a taste of the working world.

During her two weeks with us, Emily dived headfirst into a number of projects. Read all about her journey with us:

I am currently a second-year student at Birmingham City University studying Graphic Communication and undergoing my work placement module at Colour Cubed Creative Communications.

Over the past fortnight, I’ve had the chance to redesign a client’s brand identity, create concepts for a new brochure, design a leaflet cover for a leading hospitality brand, attend networking events, interview the team members and sit in on marketing meetings.

This opportunity has allowed me to learn new skills, both technically and personally. I have gained valuable insights into how a creative team works in a professional setting, learnt how to present my work to a Creative Director, and how to apply the feedback to refine my designs. This has been extremely useful as these link directly to the skills I will need to apply to my Graphic Communication course as well as preparing me to be industry-ready when I graduate in 2025.

The Colour Cubed team has been a perfect place for me to grow as a designer due to the supportive environment. I have felt completely comfortable asking questions and they have given me great opportunities to get involved, get out there and try new things. Networking events have pushed me to meet new people and feel confident in talking about my work and promoting myself.

In addition to client projects, I have also been given the opportunity to visit one of Colour Cubed’s print suppliers, Aurora Graphics, for a guided tour alongside Simon Greenfield. This experience showed me how important it is to have great relationships with your suppliers. As a Designer I had never realised the immense importance of print and just how much it impacts how you design and how rewarding it is to be able to hold or see your work physically after going through the design process.

I have also gained a further interest in marketing and how it plays a massive part in branding. I also observed marketing meetings and attended the Marketer’s Lounge networking event alongside Colour Cubed’s Marketing Manager, Lauren Crates, who has been extremely supportive and welcoming.

These past two weeks have offered me opportunities that I am extremely grateful for and have helped me grow my skills in InDesign, networking, and my love for design.
